The standard EN ISO 14119 now defines the issues that need to be considered on guards.

ISO 14119 defines principles for the design and selection of safety gate systems and will replace all national standards on this subject, such as EN 1088 for example. The transition period is 18 months.

What needs to be considered?

The measures to be implemented are designed to prevent manipulation:

  • Selection of the right interlocking device: all safety switches and safety gates systems are classified into 4 types. The standard takes into account the switch's operating principles, such as RFID or electromagnetic for instance. Coded safety switches are divided into the different coding levels.
  • Correct installation of the interlocking device: each safety gate must be checked for ways in which it can be manipulated. The necessary static and dynamic forces (minimum holding forces) are also examined.
  • Series connection of safety switches and safety gate systems: a holistic approach must be taken to interlocking devices in series. Fault exclusion is required on at least 2 safeguards in order to achieve PL e.
